Gypsy & Eastern European music specialists “Czardas”. This multi-instrumentalist group is amazing!! Neil Cremasco, Tasmanian Times Czardas performs a panoply of gypsy music from Russia and Hungary, a touch of klezmer, a bit of Balkan and the occasional venture into flamenco. Czardas also plays original material inspired by Eastern European music, and their recent compositions have a real sense of the burlesque. Their stage presence combines humour with virtuosic playing and spellbinding moments of musical eloquence. Czardas’ music is romantic, full of passion and pathos. Their concerts include a sprinkle of gypsy swing - revealing the lighter whimsical side of gypsy music.Czardas are Marjorie Gadd on violin, Steve Gadd on guitar and bazouki and Erin Collins on vocals and accordion. Marjorie, a professional string teacher, also performs with the band Silkweed. She is director of The Tasmanian Heritage String Ensemble and Valley Strings and plays with old-timey and bluegrass band, The Apple Cores and with Slapdash performing contemporary arrangements of traditional Tasmanian tunes. Her book Eureka, a teaching text for violin, is widely used. Steve is a composer, folklorist and collector. Known nationally for his playing in Shake Sugaree and solo performances, Steve is director of the Franklin Apple Harvest Folk Festival, founder of The Apple Cores and director of The Tasmanian Heritage String Ensemble. He also performs with Slapdash. Steve has published a book of collected material; the Tasmanian Heritage Apple Shed Tune Book, now in its third edition. He has recorded two CDs and plays on five others. Erin has sung in several bands and ensembles, including Bandecoute, Muses, and Saltarello, in a variety of styles from renaissance to contemporary folk and currently performs with both Czardas and Silkweed. Her vocal style carries the passion and pathos that is so much a part of the gypsy tradition. Erin has also worked with several community choirs and school groups. Czardas debut CD “In a Vision” has been extremely well received. Their new material is frequently performed and due to be recorded in 2007. Listen to the title track "In a Vision": |
